Fabric Workshops for Everyone at Make Hang

Do you love getting creative with vegetables and textiles? Lets learn more about both and make some art!

- Customized workshop topics to choose from

-All levels available from beginner to advanced

-Private instruction,  groups, and corporate workshops available

1) Indigo adventures:
Experience the magic of organically dyeing cloth using natural Indigo. (We use Michel Garcia’s recipe from his video series on natural dye, and Yoshiko Wada’s indigo powder)

2) Can it jar it:
lacto ferment vegetables in a sculptural way to culture edible probiotic potions. The juice produced from the colorful vegetables is a wonderful concentrated natural fabric dye.

3) Immersion Dyeing:
Discover the mad science of naturally dyeing fabric with home made mordants and local vegetables. Experiment with the chemistry of layering plant derived colors on cloth.

4) Eco Dyeing:
Fold found flowers and fallen leaves in silk, tie into bundles, and transfer their colors into cloth using steam. While the bundles are steaming, prepare some longer term solar dye experiments by binding up fabric in glass jars with anaerobic kitchen compost.  (Inspired in part by India Flint’s book eco colour)

5) Bicycle Shibori:
Bind, clamp, fold and sculpturally knot up silk using upcycled bicycle parts to resist dye. (Some techniques in this workshop are inspired by Shoji Fujii of Arimatsu in Japan, and Carter Smith’s Shibori techniques)

Rates start at $90 per person, for 3 to 12 people, for a 2-4 hour workshop, high quality organic materials included. It will be a blast- guaranteed good times and gorgeous fabrics for everyone.
